In a significant agricultural update, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the Second Advance Estimates of major crop production for the year 2022-23. Union Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar announced an estimated record foodgrain production of 3235.54 Lakh Tonnes for the current agricultural year, attributing the success to the hard work of farmers, the proficiency of scientists, and farmer-friendly government policies.

The Second Advance Estimates highlight remarkable achievements in the production of key crops, including record levels of rice, wheat, maize, gram, moong, rapeseed & mustard, and sugarcane. The assessment underscores the continuous development of the agriculture sector, driven by the collective efforts of stakeholders.

As per the estimates, foodgrain production stands at an impressive 3235.54 Lakh Tonnes, marking a record high. Rice production is estimated at 1308.37 Lakh Tonnes, wheat at 1121.82 Lakh Tonnes, and maize at a record 346.13 Lakh Tonnes. Additionally, nutri/coarse cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and sugarcane also exhibit substantial increases.

The announcement aligns with the United Nations’ declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets, emphasizing the significance of nutritious grains. The government’s commitment to promoting coarse grains is evident, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi naming them ‘Sri Anna.’

While celebrating the remarkable achievements, the assessments remain subject to further revision based on feedback from states, alternative sources, and other factors. The Second Advance Estimates provide a glimpse into the outstanding performance of Indian agriculture, setting the stage for a prosperous and bountiful year.
